How to Improve Air Quality Using a Window AC

Window ACs do a good job of keeping us cool. But many units also help boost the air quality indoors. Some ACs have filters that trap airborne allergens and pollutants. But it does not happen magically. Picking the right unit and maintaining it well play a central role in this.

Here’s how a window AC can help with air quality.

1. Choose an AC with Good Filtration

Start with ensuring the AC has a good air filter and is used properly. Basic mesh filters intercept large particles such as dust and hair. However, for better air quality, look for a window AC that allows finer filtration.

For instance, a unit with PM2.5 or antibacterial filters. These filters help capture smaller pollutants. They will trap microorganisms or smoke particles that hamper air quality. It can be a significant advantage for individuals with dust or pollen sensitivity.

2. Clean the Filter Often

A dirty filter cannot perform its function well. With regular use, the filters clog up with dirt particles, blocking the air flow. Consequently, the dirty air goes back into the room.

To avoid this, wash the filter once every 15 days. You may do it more frequently if your device is constantly in use. A clean filter automatically means cleaner air inside the room.

To clean the window AC filter:

  • Unplug the unit
  • Remove the front panel
  • Take out the filter
  • Wash it with water gently
  • Let it dry thoroughly
  • Reassemble it

Being negligent towards this task is one of the major contributors to the deterioration of air quality in air-conditioned rooms.

3. Put a Proper Seal at Every Point

Even the best ACs will fail if outdoor air streams in through gaps around the unit. Such air can be full of dust, pollen, smoke, and frayed fumes from typhoon winds. Seal open spaces in between with foam insulation or weather-stripping. This also enables the window AC to cool efficiently, saving energy.

4. Keep Coils and Drainages Clean

Moisture enters the unit and accumulates across the evaporator coils and the drainage tray. This creates a damp environment, allowing mold and bacteria to develop. Over time, this leads to a musty smell and emits allergens into the air. 

To prevent this, gently brush the coils with a soft brush. Also, check the drain hole to make sure it is not blocked. If it has been a long time since the AC was last cleaned, have a technician service the air conditioner. Mold may hide in places that are difficult to see or reach.

5. Use the Fan Mode

Even when you’re not using the cooling feature, the fan mode can help with circulation. This helps keep the stagnant air filtered and ensures ventilation in the closed areas for some time after the cooling has been switched off. The system works well in mild weather when cooling isn’t needed, but air circulation is.

6. Prepare for a Seasonal Inspection

This enables your unit to operate safely and fully utilize seasonal resources. 

A technician can: 

  • Clean areas that you cannot reach
  • Check for hidden mold
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the unit

This routine visit can be beneficial for your window AC and your health.
